Get to know Óbidos religious heritage
Dated from 1186, São Tiago Church was built during king D.Sancho I (known as “the settler and second king of Portugal) reign.
This wealthy church provided lodging for the royal family when needed.
Despite the 1755 earthquakes’ destructions it was fully rebuilt after 20 years.
We underline the painting on the altarpiece depicturing São Tiago Maior and also a mannerist board from Luís de Morales (certainties about the author still questionable) that belonged to the primitive altarpiece we can find exposed in the Municipal Museum of the Óbidos village.
