Senhor Jesus da Pedra Sanctuary, Óbidos

Senhor Jesus da Pedra Sanctuary, Óbidos is full of architectural particularities.

The upside down windows and a plan that combines a cylindrical exterior with an hexagonal interior.

The Sanctuary is at the entrance of the village, near the road that connects Caldas da Rainha to Óbidos.

Built in 1747 by the architect Capitão Rodrigo Franco.

On the inside we can find 3 chapels devoted to Calvário (presbytery) where André Gonçalves painting stands out, also 2 side chapels dedicated to São Josés’ death and Nossa Senhora da Conceição give room to some art works, painted by the hand of José da Costa Negreiros.

A “must see” is the stone image of a crucified Christ at the altar.

Visit the chapel and discover more of our history and local culture!
